Urinary Incontinence

Urinary or urethral incontinence (UI) is the loss of voluntary control of urination. This involuntary urination is most often seen in spayed, female, large breed dogs that are middle-aged to elderly.  In Greater Swiss Mountain Dogs, UI is also a common affliction in young growing female GSMDs. Early diagnosis and effective treatment with antibiotics and post-medication confirmation that the UI has been cleared are important. Often UI in young female Swissys resolves with the first estrus (heat) cycle.

It is also known to occur in male GSMDs, but this is not a common occurrence.
